Donkey beliefs

by Michelle Fortes

Once, a farmer was taking three of his donkeys to the market. On the way, he came across a river and decided to take a dip. But he faced a problem – he only had two ropes to tie the donkeys to a tree.

Looking around for a solution, he spotted a wise sage and asked for help. The sage didn’t have a rope but gave him an idea. “Let the third donkey see you tying the other two to a tree. Then, pretend to tie the third one as well,” the sage suggested.

The farmer followed the sage’s advice and went for a dip in the river.

When he returned, he saw the donkeys exactly where he had left them. He untied the two donkeys and urged the third one to move. But to his surprise, the third donkey refused to budge from the spot.

No amount of coaxing, kicking, or talking could make the donkey move.

Confused, the farmer returned to the sage for help. The sage asked him, Did you untie the donkey. The farmer laughed and said but I had no rope to tie it. I just pretended to tie the donkey. So the sage smiled and said , now go back and pretend to untie the donkey.

The farmer returned and pretended to untie the donkey and behold the donkey got up and started moving. The farmer thus learnt a lesson that seeing is believing .

Our belief system from our early age till 7 yrs is formed by just observing and watching. Our five senses then creates an experience and this becomes our belief system. Our brain then discerns good from bad , right from wrong . Thus we have a choice to decide our response or reaction.
